Welcome to My Travel Blog!

Hello Family & Friends,

Thank you for visiting my travel blog! I am currently working on board the "The Scholar Ship" study abroad program. The Scholar Ship is a floating university of students, faculty, and staff from around the world, traveling by ship to the following ports:

Voyage 1: Greece, Portugal, Panama, Ecuador, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, mainland China, and Hong Kong.

Voyage 2: Hong Kong, mainland China, Thailand, India, Seychelles, South Africa, Cape Verde, Spain, Turkey, Portugal, and Holland.

This is The Scholar Ship's first year, so it's been an intense and exciting experience. I am working as an Intercultural Resident Counselor (IRC) Coordinator for On Board Life (OBL) and have the privilege of co-creating the program with a group of truly talented people.

I am from...

During one of our Onboard Life meetings, we each created an "I Am From" poem to share with the group.  We then took the activity to our Resident Communities to do with the students.  The poem was structured so that we just filled in the blanks with sensory words and descriptive phrases from our respective culture--And when read aloud, they all sounded so poetic!  It was interesting to think about what we consider "home" and what descriptors we chose to use.  Here is poem...

"I Am From..."

I am from a home that smells of Persian cooking, fabrics, and flowers.  A place with a faint smell of familiarity after a short time away, and a distant smell of comfort after a long time.  Where everything is kept, not because it's pretty or because it matches, but because it's a part of our home—symbols of where we have been and what we've created.

I'm from a culture that cooks with pomegranate juice and crushed walnuts.  Where it's not a meal without rice, and where you can never have too many kabobs.

I'm from a culture where it's custom to tarofe and where people say "gorboonet beram" during good-byes.

I'm from a line of hard workers with ambition, dedication, and the belief that the world truly is our oyster.

Glossary:

Tarofe = There is no direct equivalent for this word in English, but it basically means offering what is yours to others or putting others' needs and comforts first.  It's a distinct part of the Persian culture.

Gorboonet Beram = This phrase literally translates to "I will die for you" but is basically used in the context of "Take care" or "I love you."

And just as a disclaimer: Mom, I'm not saying our house didn't match :-)

Yas!! I was just catching up on your blog, and I just read that you quit the CC---I'm so sad! But that's realllly exciting that you are an official SS employee. Congrats!

Also, I love your description of home. My best friend is Persian, and now I'm back in the valley, I practically live at her house. I'm basically becoming Persian. hahah aren't you proud?

I really miss you!!

Yassy-jan: Courtney beat me to the punch, but your announcement about your new direction reminds me of another classic Rumi poem written 800 years ago about life's changes.

The Persian goes:
Mordeh boodam, zendeh shodam,
Geryeh boodam khandeh shodam.
Dolateh eshgh aamado,
Dolateh paayandeh shodam.

My own rhyming translation goes:
I came alive after 1st dying,
I found laughter after 1st crying.
Came the power of love,
Came everlasting love.

Hi Yasser!

I just decided to catch up on your experience at sea and am truly in awe. Your poem brought back such fond memories of being your roommate and hearing stories of your family and home. I can't believe you will be sailing yet again next semester but think it is amazing that you made that important career decision. I hope you enjoy the rest of your journey and look forward to catching up when you get home. Miss you!

Love,
Stacie
